About Lynches River Heritage Preserve

Lynches River Heritage Preserve is located in eastern South Carolina, encompassing over 2,200 acres along an approximately 10-mile stretch of the Lynches River. The preserve protects one of the state's last remaining free-flowing blackwater rivers, characterized by tannin-stained waters flowing through cypress-tupelo swamps, mixed hardwood forests, and bottomland hardwoods. This ecosystem supports rich biodiversity, including several rare and endangered species such as the Carolina darter fish, red-cockaded woodpecker, and various freshwater mussels. Historically, the river corridor was used for small-scale agriculture and logging, but conservation efforts in recent decades have focused on preserving the natural landscape and restoring habitat connectivity. Visitors to the preserve can enjoy hiking along several well-maintained trails, wildlife watching—particularly birding in spring and fall migrations—and paddling sections of the river. The preserve’s largely undeveloped landscape offers a tranquil outdoor experience with opportunities to observe seasonal wildflowers, abundant amphibians, and reptiles. Key landmarks include the river itself, several old-growth stands of hardwoods, and a boardwalk crossing scenic wetland areas. The preserve offers an important outdoor classroom and research site, with ongoing ecological monitoring by South Carolina Department of Natural Resources. Lynches River Heritage Preserve appeals to naturalists, paddlers, and hikers seeking a quiet, less crowded outdoor destination with exceptional biological value.
